What Is the Stock Market?

At its core, the stock market is a place where people buy and sell shares of companies. A share represents a small piece of ownership in a company, and by owning one, you’re essentially becoming a tiny part-owner of that business.

Think of it as the biggest online marketplace in the world where companies are products, and pieces of those companies are traded throughout the day. It's the way businesses raise money to expand, and how investors (people like you!) can make money if those businesses do well.

Where do People Buy and Sell Stocks?

Stock exchanges, like the NYSE or NASDAQ, are the marketplaces where all the stock trading action takes place. They ensure that trades are smooth and secure, so buyers and sellers can confidently exchange shares. But you can't just walk into a stock exchange and start trading. Instead, brokers and trading apps like Robinhood or Fidelity make it easy to buy and sell stocks from anywhere. These platforms connect you to the stock market, bringing all its opportunities right to your fingertips.
