Are Credit Cards Your Best Friend or Worst Enemy?

Updated: Jul 18

The answer isn't quite as simple as you may think. Credit cards can be a powerful tool for managing money, but can cause problems if you're not careful.

What Exactly Does a Credit Card Do?

A credit card is a tool that lets you borrow money from a bank to buy something now and pay later. Think of it like getting a short-term loan every time you buy something. However, watch out, because if you don't pay that loan back on time, you'll owe a lot more than you originally paid.

What Are the Main Benefits?

There are 4 main benefits to credit cards:

  1. Building Your Credit Score

    ree

Every time someone responsibly uses a credit card and pays it off on time, they build a credit history. This builds your credit score, which is like a report card for how reliable of a borrower you are, or how good you are at paying back your loans. Having a higher credit score means you'll be offered lower interest rates on loans you take out in the future, such as a mortgage for a house or a loan to buy a car. Even a 1% lower interest rate could mean thousands of dollars saved in the long run, so building your credit score to secure the lowest rates possible is super important, and credit cards are a great tool to do so.

  2. Great During Emergencies

    ree

Imagine your car breaks down right before a huge job interview or your laptop explodes right before a school project is due. If you don’t have cash on hand or enough money on your debit card, a credit card can save the day. Just swipe now and pay it off later!

  1. Rewards and Perks

    ree

Some credit cards give you cash back, points, or travel miles. That means you can earn rewards just by spending money you'd spend anyway!

    Some examples may include:

    • 2% cash back on groceries or gas

    • Free hotel stays

  2. Fraud Protection

    ree

If someone steals your debit card or cash from your wallet, that’s your money gone. But with a credit card, it’s the bank’s money on the line. Most credit cards offer zero liability, an additional perk I didn't mention above, meaning you’re not responsible for unauthorized charges if you report them right away.

What Are the Main Drawbacks?

There are 3 main cons:

  1. Lowered Credit Score From Misuse

    ree

As I mentioned earlier, when used properly, credit cards can be a great tool to build credit. However, it's a two-way street.

Just like credit cards can boost your credit, they can also wreck it if you:

    • Pay late

    • Max out your limit

    • Open too many cards at once

Remember: bad credit = harder time getting loans and higher interest rates in the future, which can cost you thousands.

  1. Debt Buildup & Overspending

    ree

Credit cards make spending feel easy, sometimes too easy. Buy now pay later sounds perfect until later arrives. Because swiping a card doesn’t feel like spending real money, people often spend more with credit than they would with cash. If you don't budget properly, you could start to miss payments.

Miss payments, and you’ll get hit with:

    • Interest charges

    • Late fees

    • Lower credit score

    • A growing mountain of debt

  1. High Interest Rate Trap

    ree

If you don’t pay your balance in full each month, you could pay 20% or more in interest. That seriously adds up over time.

Final Thoughts

So, Should You Get One? Well, it depends. What's important to take away from this is that a credit card isn’t objectively good or bad, it’s a tool. If used properly, a kitchen knife can be very helpful. If not, it can be very painful. Credit cards are the same.

Our advice? If you budget wisely, only buy what you can afford, and pay your full balance every month, a credit card can be a powerful way to build a strong financial future.

But, if you use it to buy stuff you can’t afford, only pay the minimum, and ignore your statements, a credit card can lead to stress, debt, and financial setbacks.
